A Porsche sports car was caught doing 283 kilometre per hour (kmph) in Al Ain by an 18-year-old driver, more than double the permitted speed limit in that area, director of Al Ain Traffic Police was reported on Sunday as saying.

Two other cars were also hunted by hidden 'Qannas' - police speed camera - as they sped at 269 and 225 kmph respectively in the eastern oasis town, Lt Colonel Nassir Al Baloushi was quoted as saying by the semi official daily 'Al Ittihad'.

“These cars were caught in an area where there are no fixed speed cameras and were driven by young men aged between 18 and 22 years,” he said.

The first car was a sports Porche, the second a Dodge and the third a Bentley, he said, and added most of the speeding cars were caught on Nahid Road.

“We have not yet installed fixed cameras on this new road…most of those cars were hunted by Qannas, which can detect a speeding car within 500 metres.”

Colonel Baloushi said speeding cars would be impounded and the drivers fined. Families should educate their sons about such offences given their relatively small age, he added.

“We are in the process of deploying more Qannas in various areas of Al Ain, with an emphasis on the roads where most violations are committed.”
