An underground parking's ceiling caved in, damaging several cars that were parked there and forcing the residents of the building to evacuate their homes immediately in Abu Dhabi.

The damage was spread over 1,400 square metres and the cost of dmanaged cars has been estimated to be around Dh150,000.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Al Ansari, head of the UAE search and rescue team told the Arabic daily that there was a massive hunt to ensure that no one was missing and every resident and neighbour was accounted for. Residents were evacuated and a field hospital was also set up to look into injuries, if any.

The residents have been accomodated in a nearby hotel for the time being by the developer Sourouh.

Although the cause of the collapse of the ceiling is not confirmed, the experts looking into the matter claim that it could have been an engineering fault.
