The condition of the Emirati boy injured in a recent accident at the Sharjah Water Festival is still critical.

Doctors at the hospital say the boy has still not regained consciousness since the accident and has not been able to breathe enough to be taken out of the ventilator.

Two-and-a-half year old Khalifa Obaid is undergoing treatment at the Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah after he suffered severe brain injuries in a freak accident on December 18.

The boy was hit on the head by a rotating iron bar of a fast ride.

“His condition continues to remain critical. There is a lot of damage to the brain. We even removed part of the bone from the head so that his brain can expand,” said Dr Satish Krishnan, Head of the Department at Al Qassimi Hospital.

The boy continues to be fed through a tube. “At this stage we are just hoping that his body reacts to the treatment. He continues to remain unconscious. There was some movement in his body recently. Otherwise, he continues to remain on the ventilator. He did breathe in between but it was not enough for him to be taken off the system,” added Dr Krishnan.

The boy, who was accompanied by his parents, walked too close to the ride that caused the accident.
