Consumers assured on low fish prices in Ramadan

The head of the fish industry in Abu Dhabi sought to reassure consumers in the emirate that fish would be sold at lower prices during the fasting month of Ramadan despite an expected seasonal decline in supply.

Quoted by local newspapers on Monday, Ali Al Mansouri, chairman of the Abu Dhabi fishermen association, said his group would purchase most of the local fish catch and resell it to the public at low prices during Ramadan, which is expected to start at the beginning of August.

“We will be subsidizing the prices of all types of fish during Ramadan despite an expected drop in supply as most fish flee the hot weather to deep water,” he said.

“We have around 200 fishing boats that will set off daily during Ramadan but we will try to increase that number to offset the supply decline…our plan is to purchase most of the catch from fishermen and stabilize their prices for the public so other traders will not use the decline in stocks to manipulate prices.”
