Dubai’s Department of Economic Development has succeeded in compelling a décor company to return Dh2.5 million to a businessman after it failed to carry out work it had agreed to on time.

Mufied Al Zaabi, director of businesses complaints in the commercial control sector and consumer protection department, said DED had received a complaint from an investor in Dubai who had a licence from the department for opening a restaurant in the Emirate.

Pointing out that the investor wanted to have a unique design for his proposed restaurant, Al Zaabi said the complainant reported that he had an agreement with a specialist company to do the décor work for the restaurant in a specified period.

Al Zaabi pointed out that the investor had agreed to make the full payment to the decor company to finish the work on time, but nothing had been done at all for over a year.

Al Zaabi said when the investor tried to contact the décor company’s officials, they went on delaying the work and also did not return the money received, which led him to complain to DED.

Al Zaabi said after seeing that the décor company had not started any work, “we required them to return the money to the investor.”

He explained that after meeting with the décor company’s officials, the company responded to DED and returned the money to the investor.
