Death for killer as victim's kin refuse to pardon him

The UAE’s top court upheld previous court verdicts and sentenced an Asian worker to death for murdering a colleague after the victim’s relatives refused to pardon him, newspapers reported on Saturday.

Following an argument, the unnamed worker waited for the victim to leave mosque in Ajman after Friday’s prayers and stabbed him to death four times.

A criminal court in Ajman sentenced the killer to death, prompting him to appeal.

The Appeals Court upheld that sentence, which was later supported by the Court of Cassation and the Supreme Federal Court (SFC).

The SFC dismissed the defence lawyer’s argument that his client was suffering from a mental problem and was not responsible for his actions. It said the defendant had bought a knife with the intention to kill and later confessed to murdering his colleague.

“It was a premeditated murder as the defendant waited for the victim to leave mosque and attacked him…he also threatened other people who tried to protect the victim…he was intent on committing the murder,” it said.

The court said the defendant would be executed by the means available in the UAE after the victim’s relatives insisted in court on his death.
