Dealy in renewing driving licences will lead to fines, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said in a statement on Tuesday.

The fine will be effective following the lapse of 30 days from the expiry date of the driving licence, it said.

The rule is applicable under Law No (6) issued by the Council of Ministers in 1994.

Sultan Al Marzooqi, Director of Drivers Licensing at RTA Licensing Agency,  said: "The move aims to exercise control over driver licence issuance and  renewal process, and to highlight the legal implications of this issue to align them with the world's best practices applicable in this regard."

"Drivers are offered a one-month grace period after the expiry of their driving licenses; which is believed to be quite sufficient for processing the renewal of the driving license in a hassle-free and transparent process. The introduction of this fine is therefore only intended to serve as a reminder to motorists of the importance of the timely renewal of their driving licenses, and avoiding delays the driver license renewal till the 11th hour of the grace period offered," said Al Marzooqi.
