Deported expats need minister's nod to return to UAE: top court

The UAE’s top court has ruled that an expatriate deported from the country for criminal reasons must have approval from the minister of interior to return provided a minimum period of five years has passed since his deportation.

The Supreme Federal Court made the ruling when it overturned a sentence by a lower court approving the return of an Asian man to the UAE after he was deported for entering the country illegally, according to the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej.

The court said a residence visa given by the competent authorities to Mohammed Taher Abdul Rahim amounted to an “administrative error.”

“According to the law, any foreigner returning to the UAE after deportation must get approval from the minister of interior,”the court said.

Alkhaleej said Abdul Rahim was seized while sneaking into the UAE in 2011 and deported a few weeks later. He returned to the UAE in 2011.
