Abu Dhabi Police arrested an African laundry worker for allegedly conning women by charging huge sums with a promise of solving their problems using witchcraft.

The 57-year-old persuaded gullible women that he possessed special powers that could cure any disease as well as find solutions to all their physical, psychological and marital issues.

He allegedly charged Dh70,000 per session to perform witchcraft, according to a top police official.

Colonel Rashid Mohamed Bursheed, Director, CID, Abu Dhabi Police, said: “The department acted upon reliable information and several complaints from women who claimed they were duped of cash by the suspect after promising them of solutions to varied problems.”

In an undercover operation a lady officer contacted the suspect claiming that she had some social issues and was not happy in her life.

The suspect immediately asked her to pay Dh70,000 for the service. And he was caught red-handed.

Several items including talismans, old coins, paper, herbs, etc were confiscated from his residence, Col Bursheed said.

However, later during police investigations he denied practising witchcraft, claiming that he only gave his clients some herbal medicines for heart ailments.

The suspect is referred to Public Prosecution.

Abu Dhabi Police call on residents not to believe in witchcraft. In May they had started an awareness campaign to educate people about such fraudulent activities.
