Divorces surged by nearly 30 per cent in Dubai in the first eight months of 2014 and the bulk of them were among expatriates, official data showed on Saturday.

Marriages increased by only about four per cent and expatriates also accounted for more than half of them, showed the figures published by Al Khaleej daily.

From 831 in the first eight months of 2013, divorce cases surged to 1,073 in the same period of this year, the figures showed.

A breakdown showed 602 divorces were among expatriate couples while 311 were among Emiratis. Divorces also involved 113 Emirati men married to expatriate women and 47 foreigners married to Emirati women.

The figures 2,083 marriages were among expatriate couples while there were 816 marriages between Emiratis, 430 between Emirati men and foreign women and 114 between expatriate men and Emirati women.

The paper quoted Abdul Aziz Al Hammadi, head of the family guidance section at Dubai’s courts, as saying the surge in divorce cases was a natural result of the population growth. But he added there were other reasons, including poor family culture and religious motive, spouse infidelity and improper choice of wife or husband.
