A doctor in Abu Dhabi is facing charges of causing paralysis and dumbness to a patient after performing a surgery in his neck following a car accident.

The doctor, who appeared in court on Monday, denied the charges of medical error, saying the operation was successful and blaming the patient for refusing to have a second surgery, Albayan newspaper said on Tuesday.

The unnamed doctor told the judge that he had to perform the surgery to save the patient’s life after he suffered from fractures in the neck.

“Two weeks later, he came to the hospital with some complications and I advised him to have another surgery to correct the situation but he refused,” the doctor said, according to the Dubai-based daily.

It said the court adjourned hearings to November 22 after the doctor asked the judge to acquit him from all charges.
