A man in his mid-30s was rescued by alert lifeguards at the Jumeirah Open beach in Dubai on Sunday afternoon.

“The incident occurred at around 3pm. The man did not know to swim and had ventured too deep into the sea,” said a Dubai Municipality lifeguard.

According to him this holiday season has been much safer with extra emphasis on safety measures.

Dubai’s beaches have been overcrowded with thousands of visitors forcing the lifeguards to work overtime and remain extra cautious.

Apart from the usual number of lifeguards, beaches are being manned by additional police patrols.

“This is how a holiday season is expected to be. The beaches, be it the Open beach in Jumeirah 1, the Jumeirah Beach Park or the Mamzar Beach is packed with visitors. Yesterday there was hardly any space for people to sit,” said a senior Dubai Municipality Staff employed at the Open beach.

According to him lifeguards have been told to be extra vigilant during the holidays.

“We have been starting work at 5.30am.

“It is fun to see so many people around. But at the same time it is a bit stressful. Thankfully there have not been any major incidents. The weather has been perfect,” said one of the lifeguards at the Open Beach.

A large stretch of Dubai’s beach including the one opposite Jumeirah Beach Residence and several stretches from the Burj Al Arab upto the Jumeirah Beach Park remain unmanned and is being constantly monitored by the Dubai Police patrols.

Dubai police too have deployed 720 additional patrols in all major tourist attractions and have intensified patrols at parks and beaches.
