Five persons were arrested as a drug den was busted in an early morning swoop by anti-narcotics wing of the Dubai Police in Al Baraha.

In a major operation, armed anti-narcotics policemen netted the gang led by a woman and recovered 23 kilogrammes of heroin cleverly concealed in tennis balls, adhesive tapes and newspaper rolls from the hideout.

Besides the Asian woman, three Asian men and an African were part of the gang that fell in the police net.

In the biggest such operation this year, four of the members were arrested from the house while a fifth one was picked from a nearby hotel where he was holed up.

Codenamed ‘Operation Widow’ – since the gang was led by the Asian widow – the swoop has led to the recovery of the biggest seizure in terms of street value, local media reported.

Acting on a tip-off, anti-narcotics sleuths had mounted a vigil on the house that was the den of the drug traffickers who have been active for five years.

Police officials later said they used drug mules who swallowed capsules packed with narcotics smuggled from an Asian country. Carrying drug capsules in their bowels has been a favourite mode of smuggling by most of the mules around the world.

Major General Abdul Jalil Mahdi Mohammed Asmawi, director of Dubai Police anti-drugs squad was quoted by 7 Days as terming the gang as “international professionals,” that was an “evil, professional smuggling ring.”

The five arrested will be put on trial while further investigations are on.
