Dubai bans use of flammable materials in buildings

Dubai Municipality (DM) has banned the use of combustible materials in buildings, reports Arabic daily Al Bayan.
 
DM has issued a circular necessitating all consulting offices, contracting companies, suppliers and developers in Dubai not to use flammable materials in buildings and cladding and facades.
 
DM has also prohibited the use of any systems that would weaken resistance of the used materials to ignition, including thermal insulation materials like rockwool, polystyrene, bitumen and flammable installation materials are strictly banned.
 
The circular prohibits use of any combustible material, including paints, packaging materials, glues, fixtures used inside buildings and ceilings which are less resistant to ignition than walls.
 
The municipality confirmed that it would allow the use of such materials only when it matches the fire resistance rates in the code of civil defense or fire-fighting, US code (NPFA5000) in sections «5, 10, 8, 37, 3, 50, 48, and the accepted codes: 286, 221, 220.
 
Khalid Mohammed Saleh, director of buildings department at the Municipality said that this decision comes within the framework of municipal efforts to raise the standard of construction through adopting highest international standards and specifications, and to provide maximum security and safety levels, as well as maintaining the public interest, property and the residents of the buildings.
 
In addition, he added that the decision comes in confirming of the resolution No. (66) of 2003 concerning the list of requirements and specifications for thermal insulation in buildings.
 
According to the decision of the building must be divided into segments to avoid spread of fire according to the civil defense adopted codes.
