Dubai Canal: Click for your route diversion on Sheikh Zayed Road

A map of the road diversions that will take place on Sheikh Zayed Road from October 25 this year has been provided by the Road and Transport Authority (RTA), detailing which roads will be affected.

Road works have started in preparation for the diversions near Safa Park, said the RTA, although it will still take a while before traffic will be directly affected.

As Sheikh Zayed Road will eventually be lifted by a bridge to allow the extension of Dubai Canal to cross on its way to the Arabian Gulf, 12 lanes of the busiest road of the emirate will be temporarily shifted.

“Abu Dhabi-bound traffic stream will be routed to the new traffic diversion, while maintaining the traffic movement outbound from Abu Dhabi on the Sheikh Zayed Road by diverting it to the lanes currently directed towards Abu Dhabi,” explains Maitha bin Udai, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency (TRA) at the RTA.

“Parallel to this, the RTA will be starting construction works on the northern bridge in the direction of Dubai on the Sheikh Zayed Road near the Metro line after routing the traffic movement directly to the traffic diversion.”

On the map the anticipated location of the northern bridge can be seen where it says ‘Construction Area’.

Traffic coming from Abu Dhabi will be diverted to other half of the highway a little before the construction side, with a dedicated link provided for traffic coming from Meydan Road. Parallel to Business Bay Metro station (landside) traffic will be re-directed, and access to the Business Bay area will be provided here.

Traffic Abu Dhabi bound will be directed to what is currently the service lane bordering Emarat Headquarters, and these lanes will remain connected to the roundabout adjacent to Business Bay metro station (seaside). The road will lead back to the original 6 lanes just in time to take the exit to Hadiqa Street if needed.

“The number of lanes during the diversion stage will be equal to the existing number of lanes in order to make sure that such diversions will not have a negative impact on the existing traffic volumes, and accordingly avoid any congestion or delay caused by construction works," explained RTA Executive Director, Mattar Al Tayer, earlier.
