Dubai Police joined hands with Oman’s authorities to recover stolen jewellery worth nearly Dh35 million and arrest an Emirati man who used his work for a VIP to buy the items by issuing dud cheques before trying to sell them in nearby Oman.

Police said they had tried to trace the whereabouts of the man after receiving reports from several jewellery shops in Dubai that he had bought a large quantity of jewellery.

The jewellers told the police that they had agreed to accept cheques from the man who was staying in a five-star hotel in the emirate after he showed them ID cards and stamps showing he works for an important personality.

After piling up a large amount of jewellery, the man travelled to neighbouring Oman in a bid to sell it and avert suspicion.

“The coordination between police in Dubai and Oman resulted in the arrest of the Emirati who bought Dh35 million worth of jewellery using cheques that turned out to be without a balance,” Dubai’s police commander Major-General Khamis Matar Al Mazinah said, quoted by the Arabic language daily ‘Al Bayan’, which published a film about the defendant.

Assistant for criminal investigation Major-General Khalil Al Mansouri said the man was nabbed in a joint police operation codenamed ‘the swift lightning’.

“We succeeded in locating his whereabouts after he left the emirate…we found that he was in Oman trying to sell what he had looted for much lower prices,” Mansouri said.

“Through the cooperation with the Omani police, we managed to arrest the man and recover all the stolen items which are worth nearly Dh35m.”
