Dubai expats to build Kerala homes for poor

Dubai-based expatriates from the South Indian state of Kerala are continuing their humanitarian efforts to help their fellow countrymen back home.
While, Kerala Muslim Cultural Center (KMCC) is aiding the construction of a diagnostic center in Kozhikode to help poor patients in Malabar region, expats from Thiruvananthapuram have come together to build 14 homes for the homeless in the state.

This is part of the Beit Al Rehman project, which aims to provide homes for poor people across Kerala. The project will be lunched at the Thiruvananthapuram Fest organized in the UAE.

“Our plan is to build 14 houses of 400 square feet each and hand over them to eligible poor families who do not have their own house. The estimated construction cost will be a minimum half-a-million Indian rupees. We will also try to provide them with a well for drinking water,” said K H M Ashraf, vice-president, KMCC UAE.

“Each house will have a bedroom, hall, kitchen, toilet and, if the budget permits we will bear the cost of digging a well for each house,” said S Shafeek, president, KMCC Thiruvananthapuram.

KMCC Sharjah, Ajman, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and other emirates are also contributing to building 1,000 houses for the poor people back home.  Last year, more than 200 houses were handed over to the needy people in different parts of Kerala, especially in the Malabar region and now the scheme is extended to other parts of the state.

There are about 80 regional wings for KMCC which are building their homes for the poor families back home. The organization has also helped in the marriage of poor women; in providing scholarships and meeting educational expenses of meritorious students; and helping patients.

The Thiruvananthapuram fest in Dubai will highlight these humanitarian efforts apart from art and cultural programmes. A short film on CH Center - a charity organization offering free dialysis for kidney patients and other healthcare efforts also will be showcased,” said KMCC officials.

Recently, Dubai KMCC officials handed over INR 8million for the construction of free dialysis units as part of its project to establish free dialysis centers near government hospitals and medical colleges in Kerala.

The Shihab Thangal Diagnostic Center in Kozhikkodu Medical College is being constructed with the help of Dubai KMCC.  The proposed diagnostic center will offer facilities like MR Scanning, CT Scanning and other medical facilities targeted at the poor and economically backward patients.

Dr Shashi Tharoor, Indian Minister of state for Human Resources and Member of Parliament representing Thiruvananthapuram, will inaugurate the free housing project at the fest.
