Dubai Municipality launches Dubai Lamp initiative

The Dubai Municipality has launched the Dubai Lamp initiative in partnership with Philips Lighting, as part of the green initiatives designed to encourage sustainable development, under the directives of Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The initiative was launched during the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2016), at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre by Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality and Paolo Cervini, President, Philips Lighting Middle East and Turkey.

Under the initiative, energy efficient LED lamps will be produced by replacing conventional lamps, and households and enterprises can reduce energy used for lighting by up to 90 percent. The lamp has an average lifespan which is 15 times longer than conventional lamps, and will be available in Dubai before the end of the year.

By 2017, two million Dubai Lamps will be supplied for residential and professional use across the city. This could increase to 10 million lamps by 2021.

"His Highness Sheikh Mohammed has always been keen to promote such green initiatives designed to encourage sustainable development, which contribute significantly towards the national economy and benefit future generations. It is very encouraging for the clean energy sector to see such unique achievements led by Dubai providing a role model for the world," Lootah said at the launch.

He said the Dubai Lamp initiative aims to raise public awareness towards the need to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

"The initiative supports the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy which targets a 30 percent reduction in energy consumption by 2030 and the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy, which is aimed at reducing carbon emissions by 16 percent by 2021," Lootah added.

Eric Rondolat, CEO of Philips Lighting, said, "This focussed and result-driven partnership with the Dubai Municipality is a good example of how a public-private partnership can deliver innovation that is practical and cost-effective for both consumer and professional markets while helping to combat the serious issue of climate change.

"Over the past three years we have worked with the municipality to transform municipal buildings with energy efficient LED lighting. This initiative is a natural next step, which will help to set a new benchmark in energy efficiency and sustainable development in Dubai."
