Published

Dubai Central Laboratory in co-operation with Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology will start verification of accuracy of measures and weights of gold in jewelleries in Dubai by early 2012, according to the agreement signed between the authority and municipality.

Hawa Bastaki, director of DCL, said the agreement comes as part of the co-operation between the civic body and the authority, their keenness to ensure safety of measuring instruments in accordance with the mandatory requirements and for consumer protection.

“The municipality deals with large segments of society. It has the infrastructure, qualified staff and laboratories that have won international accreditation in a number of metrological areas,” she said.

“DCL has been authorised for the verification and inspection of measuring instruments of weighing machines. Pre-packed cases, registration of maintenance and repair areas and installation of measuring instruments will be inspected in accordance with the mandatory requirements,” she added.

The municipality will issue verification certificates in accordance with technical regulations and procedures approved by the authority. The authority will issue verification signs and seals bearing the logos of both parties, which shall be fixed on the measuring instruments according to technical regulations and procedures. Gold traders should know the required specifications of measuring equipments. In cases of violations, jewelleries must take rectifying actions.
