Dubai Police block 40 'narco' websites

Dubai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Department blocked 40 websites promoting drugs last year, compared to 32 in 2014, according to a report in the Arabic daily newspaper 'Al Khaleej'.

Colonel Eid bin Harib, Director General of the Anti-Narcotics Department, said web sites that promote drugs are being monitored round the clock.

He added that most of these web sites are hosted in countries where there is no ban on trafficking in these substances.

Colonel Eid Harib added drug seizures rose 8.7 per cent from 1,267 cases in 2014 to 1,377 in 2015.

The number of people arrested in drug cases rose 11.8 per cent from 1,667 people in 2014 to 1,864 in the following year.

The quantity of drugs seized rose 21.5 per cent from 487kg in 2014 to 592kg in 2015.

Colonel Harib also said there were 615 cases of drug abuses involving 802 people and 61 cases of drug trafficking involving 80 people last year.

There were 139 cases of drug promotion involving 206 people and 372 cases of drug possession involving 543 people.

There were 170 cases of bringing drugs into the country involving 195 people and 18 cases of drug imports involving 33 persons. There was one case of growing narcotic plants and one case of drug export involving four people.

Col. Harib said out of those arrested in drug cases during the past year, there were 821 Gulf nationals, 349 Arabs and 694 foreigners.  

Nearly 100kg of heroin, 78.5kg of hashish, 33.5kg of opium, 11kg of marijuana, 163.7kg of cocaine were seized.

Besides this, 5.3kg of Shaboo and 65,124,72 pills were seized.

The number of UAE nationals arrested rose from 142 in 2010 to 210 in 2011, 267 in 2012 and 290 in 2013 but declined to 273 in 2014 and 242 in the following year
