Dubai Police nab bikers who race, tamper plates

Dubai Traffic Police has discovered a new method to nab bikers who manipulate number plates to avoid being spotted by radars, 'Emarat Al Youm' reports.

Some motorcyclists, who indulge in racing on roads, fix their number plates in such a manner that they are not captured by radars. Now Dubai Police has devised a method to update cameras and radars to spot such bikes.

And this has resulted in fewer accidents this year, said Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, Commander-in-Chief, Dubai Police.

Recently, police nabbed a motorcyclist who was racing and discovered that he had tampered his number plate.

Maj-Gen Mazina said, only 31 deaths were reported in the first quarter of 2015 compared to 49 in the same period last year. And Dubai Police aims to further reduce the percentage of deaths to less than one per cent by 2020, he added.

Police not only regularly updates radars and cameras to overcome manipulative techniques used by motorists, but also initiates awareness campaigns, he said.

'Kolona Police’ (We are all police) is one such community-based programme that encourages public to participate in road policing. Yet another programme called ‘white points’ rewards committed drivers.

Dubai Police has assistant patrol teams in most areas that have resulted in the reduced number of traffic deaths. Maj-Gen Mazina said most internal and external roads of Al Aweer, Al Khawaneej, Al Warqa’a, Al Mizhar, Muhaisna, Mamzar, Jumeirah, Al Barsha and Nad Al Humar are covered.

He said of the 512 seized vehicles, there were cars that participated in the longest race on public roads as well as those that were driven on hard shoulder and vehicles with tampered number plates.

Maj-Gen Mazina said in one case the driver who was racing to one of his relative’s house and upon seeing traffic patrols tried to escape, but his relative handed him over to the cops.
