Dubai Police Rescue: Why this trucker luckiest survivor of 2015

An Asian truck driver was the luckiest road accident survivor in 2015, according to top Dubai Police Rescue official.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Major Khalid Al Hammadi, Acting Director General of Dubai Police Rescue Department and Head of Special Task Force in Dubai Police said that the accident took place a day before the end of 2015.

“In this case of accident, the truck driver hit another truck from rear. Due to the huge impact of the hit, the truck door opened and the driver was thrown out of the truck, but his foot got stuck in the cabin.”

Major Al Hammadi added that the driver was hanging outside the truck with his foot stuck inside.

“This is why he survived and did not die in this accident. We arrived at the accident spot, and then cut parts of the truck’s front to release his foot.”

He pointed out that this accident took place at around 2am and they finished the rescue work at around 6am.

Last person to die in 2015

“It was a terrible accident before the New Year. The driver and everybody involved in this case were amazed and happy that two workers could be rescued.”

However, one worker who lost his life in the incident on December 31, was the last person to die in an accident in 2015 in Dubai, according to a top official.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Major Khalid Al Hammadi, Acting Director General of Dubai Police Rescue Department, and Head of Special Task Force in Dubai Police said, “In this case, a man was cleaning a five-metre deep manhole.

After inhaling poisonous methane gas, he was unable to come out of the manhole.

“One of his colleagues knew that he was in trouble and went down to help him.

“However, he also could not make it back. A third colleague went in to help the duo, but he also couldn’t come out.”

Major Al Hammadi added that the other workers who were with the trio at the site called Dubai Police for help.

The Rescue Department team was called in to help save the three workers.

“We sent the team members to help them. They were equipped with oxygen masks and went down the narrow channel to save them. The rescue mission was difficult as the manhole was narrow.

“The rescue staff succeeded in saving two cleaners, but unfortunately, one worker died.”

He pointed out that initial investigations showed that inhalation of methane gas was the main cause of death.

Major Al Hammadi added that sometimes negligence by companies for safety often lead to death.

“Sometimes, the companies provide the cleaners with these masks, but the cleaners are careless and too lazy to wear them while working.”

He added that according to the law, if the company is found to be at fault for not providing the workers with safety gear or masks, then it is punished.
