In the first eleven months of the current year, Dubai anti-narcotics squad seized 3,539 kilograms of drugs in 916 cases involving 1,193 suspects compared to 830 kg in the same period last year, a senior Dubai Police officer has revealed.

Major-General Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director-General of Anti-narcotics Department, Dubai Police, told the media on Monday that Dubai deems drug prevention as a national and humanitarian duty which requires all hands of Emiratis and residents on deck to spare the UAE the harm and ills of drug.

He said that the UAE in general and Dubai in particular is not a destination for drug though local anti-narcotics teams were facing a tremendous challenge to prevent use of drug, notably non-conventional, among youth.

Dubai Police records, he added, showed that 49.583 million narcotic pills were caught from January to November 2013 compared to 1.09 million seized throughout 2012 thanks to the great efforts being made by Dubai Police.

In terms of the largest seizure of narcotic substances, he noted that Tramadol, (a narcotic-like pain reliever) topped the list with (2,896 kg), followed by hashish (339.728 kg), Captagon (140.9 kg), heroin (60.586 kg) and opium (5kg).

He said that cocaine haul saw a remarkable drop this year reaching 28.780 kg from over 204kg last year.

Among the 1,193 suspects arrested by Dubai Police during 2013, he explained that 464 were consumers, 40 traffickers, 52 peddlers, 435 caught red-handed, 192 smugglers and 10 importers. No one was caught exporting drug this year contrary to last year during which one exporter was arrested.

Of the 916 registered cases of drug, he said, 357 were for consumption, 161 for smuggling, 320 for possession, 37 for trafficking, 35 for peddling and 6 for import.
