A man is demanding compensation of Dh200,000 from a restaurant in Dubai after he found remains of a cockroach in his salad dish but the management has offered him just Dh10,000 and an apology, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

The customer, identified as SM, said he had suffered psychologically since he saw what is left of a cockroach in his dish at the restaurant, adding that he had reported the incident to the Municipality and the consumer protection division at the Ministry of Economy before resort to court, Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily said.

The ministry said it had summoned restaurant representatives to its offices this week and conveyed the customer’s complaint, adding that the management favoured an out-of-court settlement and offered Dh10,000 damages and an apology.

The paper said the customer refused that offer after the Municipality confirmed there were pieces of an insect in the salad dish, which was partly consumed by that man.

“The customer has accepted to discuss the issue with the restaurant management to reach a settlement before going to court,” said Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of the consumer protection division.
