Dubai's Tecom goes underground for parking

Basement parking is in its last stage at Tecom area in Dubai.

It may be recalled that a paid parking scheme was introduced in three localities in Tecom earlier this year.

An additional number of parking permits will be provided once all basement parking areas have been set up and opened for use.

In a statement sent to Emirates24|7, Tecom said, "Currently, the new system is implemented in all basements in Dubai Knowledge Village and Dubai Media City's (DMC) building numbers 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8."

Three additional surface parking plots are currently under construction in DMC and Dubai Internet City (DIC). The existing basements of DIC will be used as sector surface parking, said the statement.

The additional parking space is available for those who have been allocated a parking slot in that area only. In accordance with the parking scheme
introduced in the area in April, business partners in Tecom buildings are eligible for parking cards depending on the amount of floor space they have
leased.

"These cards are valid for specific parking areas (sectors), which are clearly marked out by signage. Some business partners eligible for cards
[will] have been allocated basement parking space," said Tecom Investments.

However, the parking slots that are currently under construction will create additional parking space for mostly non-card holders and visitors to
the business parks, and will be available in the next two months, it added.

The parking scheme was implemented in Tecom in cooperation with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to reduce traffic congestion, as the area witnessed continuous growth, RTA explained earlier.

"It is too early to judge the new system, but we are confident it will help ease congestion in these popular business parks and ensure parking space is available to all eligible businesses," said Tecom Investments.

Although Tecom Investments did not enclose the occupancy rate of the parking zones, it said there are still parking spaces available in most sectors and eligible business partners, who had not yet applied for their allotment of parking cards, could still apply for them.

Parking cards are available against the following rates:
-       3 months parking for Dh700
-       6 months parking for Dh1,300
-       1 year at parking for Dh2,500
