Dubai, Sharjah traffic jams as schools re-open

Published

UPDATE: At 9.45am Al Naseem Street and Al Falak Street, connecting Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Sufouh Road were also in gridlock, at the entrance of Dubai Media City. An eye-witness stated that the junction in front of Media One Hotel was jammed, with cars stuck in the yellow box, attempting to connect to Al Sufouh.

Frustrated commuters took to social media complaining of early morning gridlock across Dubai and Sharjah roads, as the second wave of UAE schools opened today, post the summer break.

Commuters complained of being stuck in jams for 1.5 hours to cross a two kilometre stretch in Sharjah, while four accidents were reported in the stretch from National Paints flyover, heading towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

Reports of accidents on Salam Street and Saada Street, heading into Dubai has also caused a gridlock on both roads.

Angadh Saxena, a Sharjah resident, spoke to Emirates 24|7, saying: “I left home a little before 7am, from the Al Khan area. I only managed to reach Al Mulla junction and hour and a half later. It is a five-minute drive.

“At that point, I was so frustrated that I turned my car right around and returned home. I will make an attempt again, post-10am.”

The internal roads of Sharjah have not fared better, with Al Ittihad Road and Beirut Road, leading into Dubai, also bearing the brunt of traffic.

Commuter Muad Alghazali tweeted: “Mirdiff is swamped with traffic.”

Pockets of traffic are also being reported in Discovery Gardens, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Hessa Street and the DIP area.

Meanwhile, those looking for alternatives to Sheikh Zayed Road, commuter Anita Dastoor said Al Wasl and Beach Road were looking good, heading from Dubai.

Also, traffic on Al Khail Road is also relatively free flowing.
