Street lighting will be reduced in some communities where traffic is thin and where lighting is needed the least, the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) said in a statement today.

The initiative is aimed towards a reduction in carbon emissions and power wastage, the authority explained.

“The power saving initiative involves switching off street lights of 44 per cent of total street lighting poles on collector and internal roads of residential communities witnessing thin traffic movement,” explained Maitha bin Adai, CEO of the RTA’s Transport and Roads Agency.

The reduction of street light will vary from one community to another depending on several factors including the area of the neighbourhood and the number of lighting poles in place, she explained.

At intersections and curves street lights will remain in consideration of traffic safety, which has been studied for each of the communities.

“The power-saving plan in the lighting systems of residential communities in Dubai has been subjected to a thorough study and will be implemented in a way that ensures the smooth flow of traffic as well as the safety and security of users of these roads,” added Maitha.

In anticipation of complaints at the start of the implementation, awareness campaigns will be launched, said the RTA.

The initiative is aims to achieve environmental benefits through reducing carbon emissions to the atmosphere, and realising material benefits as the reduction of power consumption reduces power wastage.
