A special committee has been formed to organise swimming, sporting activities and marine tourism projects on the beaches and shores of Dubai, according Lt. Colonel Abdullah Al Maziod, director of Dubai Ports Police Station.

The committee was set up following increase in activities like swimming, sailing, yachting and jet skiing.

He also said many shore line-based tourism projects are planned in Dubai.

The committee will chaired by Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police commander-in-chief.

Dubai Ports, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Customs, Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Maritime Authority will be represented in the committee.

The committee will demarcate areas for swimming and other activities like sailing, jet skiing and yachting.

Lt Colonel Al Maziod said areas where swimming and sea sports are allowed have been demarcated to ensure safe beaches for tourists and water sports enthusiasts and to avoid hindering port traffic.

According to local laws, marine sports are allowed only at a distance of 300 meters from the beaches approved for swimming to prevent injuries to swimmers and beachgoers.

According to statistics of Dubai Municipality’s Department of Public Parks and Horticulture, the number of visitors to Dubai’s beaches, including Jumeirah and Mamzar Open Beach, has reached 3.397 million so far this year.
