The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announced that it's currently studying the implementation of a new system, 'E-Call', which will automatically enable vehicles to call emergency services for help if they were involved in traffic accidents.

According to TRA, once implemented, this new system will help in saving the time which is vital in saving lives of traffic accident victims.

Engineer Mohammed Jadah, Director of Wireless Communication Services at TRA told Al Bayan daily that in this new system, they are going to insert a system in vehicles which calls police if the vehicle is involved in a traffic accident. “In this, the system calls the police and goes on speaker, which allows the car accident victims to talk to police. This process takes place automatically, and it will save time to response to the accident scene which is vital in saving the lives in critical accidents.”

He pointed out that they are currently studying the implementation process of this system along with the Ministry of Interior and vehicle manufacturers, which will include inserting this system in all the vehicles in the country by issuing a new law in this regard.

He noted that many lives are lost in traffic accidents due to the late reporting of these accidents. “In the new system, these lives will be saved because sometimes the bad condition and panic after the accidents prevents drivers from calling for help. The system will automatically call for help after 13 seconds from the time of the accident takes place.”

He added that the new system also sends the exact location of the vehicles through the GPS system as well as the time of the accident and the vehicle's number plate details.

Engineer Jadah added that they are currently checking the readiness of the telecommunications networks in the country to activate this system through Etisalat and Du.

He pointed out that this system will be implemented in Europe next year, and all the vehicles that enters the European Union must have this system.
