With the deadline for Dubai residents drawing close for renewing or applying for ID cards, the Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) has launched a multi-lingual tweet campaign, urging residents to register to avoid paying penalty.

Under the handle @EmiratesID, the tweets were written in Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Russian, Mandarin and English, and it read; “There’s just a week left for the May 31st deadline. #Dubai residents hurry up and apply for your #EmiratesID! #UAE.” If residents fail to register before May 31, they will be fined Dh20 per day, up to a maximum of Dh 1,000.

Eida has also provided Dubai residents with a brochure titled “Don’t Panic”, which is translated into nine languages, explaining the registration procedure and has also launched an ad campaign through newspapers, Dubai Metro, social media channels and mobile text messages, in an effort to spread awareness about the need to register for ID cards, confirmed Ayesha Al Rayesi, Project Manager, Planning & Quality, Acting PR and marketing manager at Eida.

Eida has also urged UAE nationals and residents to register their children below 15 years before October 1, after which they will have to pay penalty.

“Yes, it is mandatory for all under-15s, nationals and residents, to register before the deadline, failing which they will be charged a penalty of Dh20 per day, up to a maximum of Dh1,000,” clarified Diyaa Abdul Al, senior officer media and communications at Eida.

However, exception will be made to children whose parents have residence visa up to November or December this year. “They can apply for the Emirates ID when they renew their visa.”

Children need not be present while registering for the Emirates ID, and the process can be completed by the parent by going to a typing centre with a colour passport photograph of the child (with a white background) and the original passport.
