Electronic tags for offending drivers

Dubai Police considers plans to electronically tag vehicles of offending motorists in a move aimed at removing the need for impounding thousands of vehicles and urging drivers to be more responsible, while offering them a third option.

Motorists caught committing major offences will have their vehicles fitted with electronic tags for up to a month. If drivers attempt to move the monitored vehicle, it will set off an alarm in the police command room and they risk tougher penalties.

This will be an option offered to motorists, instead of having vehicles impounded in the detention centre. However, if drivers move their tagged vehicle, not only will the vehicle be impounded but they will also face a fine.

Currently, those caught speeding and driving recklessly or those who have surpassed the 24 black points either have their vehicles impounded or they pay Dh100 each day to hold on to their vehicle. With the new proposed system, motorists have a third option.

Dubai Police is studying the plan and expects to activate it later this year.
