Email on poisonous rain in UAE a hoax

An e-mail doing the rounds about poisonous rain or rain carrying radioactive particles in the UAE is hoax, said a metereologist.

According to 'Gulf News', the e-mail reads as follows: "If it rains today or in the next few days, do not go under the rain. If you get caught out, use an umbrella or raincoat, even if it's only a drizzle.

Radioactive particles, which may cause burns, alopecia or even cancer, may be in the rain."

This comes amid reports of a leak in a nuclear plant in Fukushima, Japan following the tsunami.

Small traces of radioactive particles such as Xenon and iodine-131 have been found in Australia, Malaysia, Canada and other countries close to Japan.

The meteorologist clarified that "the recent showers in Al Ain and other eastern areas of the UAE were the result of weather developments over the Hajar Mountains of Oman".

"Chances of rain still exist in the area but people need not to worry about the radiation as the area is still free of the radioactive particles," he said.
