An Emirates 24|7 story has won the top media award by a UAE-based Indian socio-cultural organisation.

Senior Reporter VM Sathish, who has been working with Emirates 24|7 since 2006 won the award for his report on an Indian man who continued to remain in prison for almost an year after his girlfriend had cleared his credit card dues, and for another report on an Indian who was imprisoned after his bank account was misued to withdraw Dh500,000 from a company account.

Pramad B Kutty, a senior cameraman with the television news channel Manorama News also won the award for his video report on a group of illegal Indian workers living in a public park. The story was aired on the prime time news bulletin following which the men received aid and were repatriated to India.

Indian expat organisation Chiranthana has been honouring journalists in the UAE for their exceptional reporting for the last 12 years.

All these years the media award focused on journalists working for Malayalam language media. However for the first time this year it qualified Indian journalists working in Engish media in the UAE as well.

“Chiranthana Media Award was started in the year 2000 initially with just one award for the best Indian journalist, whose reports really touched the life of a downtrodden Indian or otherwise helped the Indian community,” said Punnakkan Mohammed Ali, President of Chiranthana.

“We have started the media award scheme in Dubai to encourage Indian journalists. The Indian Government or the State Government of Kerala do not consider Gulf based Indian journalists for their annual media award programmes. We will press the Government of India to change this attitude, because a lot of good work by Indian journalists in the Middle East are not appreciated back home,” said Salam Pappanasshery, Treasurer of Chiranthana, a non-political socio-cultural organisation.
