Emirates Road to be expanded to 7 lanes

The Emirates Road linking Dubai to Sharjah, reputed for its high number of deadly accidents, will be expanded from three to seven lanes to tackle the problem, Dubai’s traffic police chief was reported on Thursday as saying.

Colonel Saif Al Mazroui said the expansion would be carried out at a 2-7 km road strip towards the entrance of Sharjah city near Mlaiha Road exit.

The Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum said the project follows its reports about the death of 12 people in separate accidents on that road in five months. It said four were killed in just 25 days this year.

Mazroui said the traffic police in Dubai and Sharjah had discussed the expansions with the other competent departments, including the public works ministry and the Road and Transport authorities in the two emirates.

“The meetings resulted in an agreement to expand that road from three to seven lines…it could reach 10 lines in some parts,” he said.

He said the project, designed to reduce traffic jams and curb accidents, would be completed within 18 months, adding that it may create bottlenecks while it is under construction. “But it will provide a radical solution to traffic woes on that road.”
