Emirati dad beaten up by son over film

Published

A 57-year-old Emirati man was severely beaten up by his son at their home in Abu Dhabi after the father ordered the boy who was watching a Western film to turn the TV off because it was too late at night. The son said he was simply defending himself.

Although he is a military arts trainer, the father was admitted to hospital with a broken arm and bruises all over his body but he refused to report his son to the police.

The father said his son, 23, assaulted him just because he told him to turn the TV off while he was watching an American film with his sister and her daughter.

“The father refused to report the attack to the police on the grounds his son is a university student…but he said he was shocked by the savage attack by the boy as he had never been so cruel or hot tempered before,” Emarat Alyoum daily said.

The paper quoted the son, a body-building champion, as saying he assaulted his father to defend himself after the man lost his temper and tried to attack him.

“The son claimed his father uses tranquilizers to control his temper and that there have been family disputes before that incident….he said he did not mean to harm his father but to defend himself and that his mother had many times asked for a divorce because of his father’s mistreatment of the family and lack of responsibility towards them.”

The paper quoted a social official as saying it was the first reported case of its kind in the UAE and that the son’s behavior shows there were deep inter-family rifts.

“It is the first case of its kind in the UAE…the ministry has not received any report about a similar incident before,” said Fowzieh Tarish, director of the family development division at the Ministry of Social Affairs.
