The number of Emiratis working at Serco, the Dubai Metro operator, currently tops 127 employees, which is 11 per cent of the total workforce employed for the Metro’s management and operations by the company.

This was confirmed by Abdul Rida Abu Al Hassan, Acting CEO of the Rail Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

"The percentage of the UAE citizens employed at top management positions in Serco is as high as 40 per cent, and the percentage of those employed in intermediate management positions is 28 per cent. Emiratis work in various fields and sections of the Dubai Metro such as customer service, trains operation and maintenance, stations management, ticket sales, public relations and marketing, administrative affairs, security of stations and trains, training and personnel," he said.

"According to the contract with the RTA, Serco will seek to push Emiratisation rate to 50-60 per cent in the top and intermediate management positions by the end of 2014."

Al Hassan said: "Serco has launched several training programmes in cooperation with universities and colleges of the UAE with the aim of qualifying Emiratis to work in public transport sector, especially the rail transport. In the meantime, the fresh recruits taking up positions in the Metro work team of the company are subjected to intensive training programmes on management, operation and maintenance.”

By the end of the training programme they have to pass the required tests that empower them to carry out their duties at the highest global standards. Once the fresh employees clear the tests, Serco’s human resources department prepares their future career management plans to enhance their abilities and skills in their respective fields."

Al Hassan underscored the importance of Emiratisation that is considered a top priority of the RTA and an integral part of its strategy in keeping with the current development in the quality of services delivered to all segments of the community.
