An Egyptian man drowned at a hotel swimming pool just after arriving in Abu Dhabi to take up a job as a petroleum engineer.
The unnamed man was met at Abu Dhabi airport by a company representative who checked him at a five-star hotel and was to take him to the office on the next day.
“At night, the man went to the swimming pool…he went into the water although he was not a good swimmer and no one was there at the time,” Albayan daily said.
“He tried to avoid the deep area of the pool but as he swam, he later found himself in deep water…the man was unable to get out and drowned without being noticed by any one…the man was to be his parent’s sole supporter.”
The Dubai-based Arabic language paper said a court found the hotel responsible for the man’s death and ordered it to pay diya (blood money) to his parents.
After several sessions, an appeal court also ordered the hotel to pay 250,000 Egyptian pounds (Dh115,000) to the parents, who had demanded Dh10 million damages.
