An Emirati man, his wife and one-year-old daughter escaped death when they were helped out of the water just before their car sank down after plunging off the road into a bay in Ras Al Khaimah, press reports said on Tuesday.

Taher Limar was driving his vehicle just after mid night when it swerved off the road because of poor visibility and plunged down into the water in Khor Al Muairid in the city, the Dubai-based Emarat Alyoum daily said.

“They were helped out of the water just before the car sank deep in the Khor… residents said the fall was because of poor visibility and lack of safety conditions in that area,” the paper said, adding that four similar cases had taken place in Khor areas in the emirate before, resulting in the death of four persons.

It said Limar was making a left turn when he lost control of the vehicle, which swerved off the poorly-lit road and plunged into the water.

The three were taken to Saqr Hospital after suffering medium injuries.

A Syrian man was killed when his car plunged into the fish market Khor last year while a Qatari died trying to rescue him. In February, a Yemeni man and a Sudanese girl died after their car fell off the Qawassmi Corniche.

“There are several Khors in Ras Al Khaimah and it is difficult to fence them off all because of the long distance,” said Abdullah Yousuf, chairman of the RAK public works and services department. “We have not received any request from the public or the competent authorities to put barriers or signboards in those areas…I believe the reason for all these accidents is poor attention by the drivers.”
