A single traveler arriving at Dubai International Airport might be surprised when he and his one piece of luggage are accommodated by a six-seater cab because at the moment the regular taxi has disappeared from the airport domain.

Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) has introduced the new measure on a tiral basis due to a large demand for family taxis from the location, Emirates 24|7 has learnt.

Although DTC has yet to comment to queries from this website, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) responded to a customers' query on the same in a conversation on the official Twitter page of RTA.

While the customer complained of the lack of regular taxi services, arguing that there are many single travelers who do not need the larger taxi, RTA replied the initiative was on trial and based on the demand of customers for the family taxi.

The customer answered that he, among others, would now be charged extra as he did not have the choice for a regular taxi, which he did not agree with.

However, no mention was made of a price difference.

A source within RTA confirmed to this website that during the trial period no extra charges would be added to the larger taxis. Whether this will be the case if the initiative receives the green light, is unclear.

In general, the difference between a family taxi fare and a regular taxi fare is 15 fils, once the taxi has reached one kilometer. When making a ride of 30km, a family taxi ride would cost the customer Dh56, while a regular taxi ride would cost 52. This is a difference of Dh4, the same one would pay for crossing a Salik gate.

Dubai International Airport was listed as the 11th busiest airport globally in terms of passenger traffic. It facilitates 6000 flights per week through 130 airlines, to more than 120 destinations.

In addition to the taxi, travelers have the option of booking a limousine service running from the airport, or taking the metro, which runs from 5.50am until midnight during weekdays, 5.50am until 1am on Thursdays and 1pm until 1am on Fridays - running into Saturday early morning.
