Faraj Fund releases 2,085 prisoners, assists 264 families

Major General Nasser Lakhreibani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Faraj Fund, has said that the Faraj Fund has helped in releasing 2,085 prison inmates, 105 of whom are Emiratis, between May 2009 and August 2013.

He added that the fund also assisted 264 families, of which 259 are Emirati families, during the first eight months of this year.

Major General Al Nuaimi said that the total financial assistance of the Fund to the welfare fund of inmates of the Penal and Correctional Institutions at the Ministry of Interior stood at Dh45.48 million, of which over 44Dh.7 million was allocated to the settlement of debts of the inmates, and the provision of tickets for those deported from the country.

Emiratis and local charity organisations praised the humanitarian role of the Faraj Fund in settling the fines imposed on inmates in civil cases.

The Faraj Fund was established on 26th June 2009 through Ministerial Decree No. 300 for the year 2009, by the Minister of Social Affairs.

Ministerial Decree No. 305 for the year 2010 released on 23rd June 2010, amended its name to ‘Faraj Fund’.
