Adnoc Distribution on Saturday commissioned its first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling station and vehicle conversion centre in Khalifa 'A' city in Abu Dhabi.

The commissioning was attended by Yousif Omeir bin Yousif, Secretary general of the Supreme Petroleum Council and CEO of Adnoc.

Abdullah Salem Al Dhaheri, Director General of Adnoc Distribution, said the commissioning of the first CNG filling station and the centre for converting vehicles to use CNG was inline with the vision of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the directives of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The move also comes as part of the efforts to realise goals of the Abu Dhabi Government's 2030 Vision of maintaining cleaner and pollution-free environment.

He added that Adnoc Distribution had, in collaboration with the sister company Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd (Gasco), nearly completed the project's first phase which entailed construction of 16 CNG filling stations, 10 in Abu Dhabi, 2 in Al Ain and 4 in Sharjah, as well as 9 vehicle conversion centres, operated by specialist companies.

"Six CNG filling stations have already been constructed, including the Khalifa 'A' station," he said.

"We expect that by the end of 2012, around 25 per cent of the government vehicles will be converted to be run by CNG."
