Four labourers have been arrested in an attempt to steal power cables from the building site, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

AA, 48, plumper, AB, 26, assistant plumper, SS, 27, worker, WM, 26, mason, were accused of attempting to steal cables from the construction site cables of their employer Built Middle East Contracting at the Palm Jumeirah’s Fairmont Hotel project. But they failed as guard discovered the theft and notified the senior officials.

The guard noticed missing cables and became suspicious of the four labourers – all Indian nationals - as they stayed at the site even after the duty hours.

When the guard questioned AA about the missing cables and why he is still on the site, the latter offered the former Dh2,000 as a bribe for not reporting the theft.

Tempting the guard to accept the bribe, AA showed him a mobile phone video recording of himself paying Dh50,000 to a person.

The guard turned down the bribe and asked him to leave the site. Next day, the guard found the missing cables hidden in a room at the site. AA continued bribing the guard and offered him gold jewellery.

The guard refused the bribes and notified officials in the company.

DS, 59, director of HR department, testified before the prosecution that the company was carrying construction work at the project site and the four accused are of the company’s employees. AB, SS and WM claimed that AA was the one who asked them to steal electricity cables.  Confronting AA with the theft, he confessed to it, DS testified.

The court adjourned the case for verdict until March 21.
