An Abu Dhabi court sentenced a TV photographer to four months in prison for trying to extort money from a female telecaster in the same satellite TV channel following an alleged relationship, a newspaper said on Thursday.
The woman had told police she was receiving texts on her mobile phone asking her to pay Dh200,000 or her private pictures stolen from her laptop would be publicised, the Arabic language daily ‘Al Bayan’ said.
Police found that the texts had been sent from a Saudi mobile phone number and decided to set up a trap for the unknown sender.“They asked her to tell him she agreed to the demands and would like to meet him to pay….when he came to the assigned place, police were waiting for him.”’
Al Bayan’ said the unknown defendant denied the charges but the court convicted him and sentenced him to four months in prison.“He was sentenced although he kept denying the charges…he told court that he had a relationship with that woman and she had told him many times that she could live away from him…but she denied all these allegations and told court they are mere illusions in his mind,” the paper said without naming the UAE-based TV channel.
