The number of deaths from car accidents in Dubai in the first 11 months of 2013 hit 148, up from 108 during the corresponding period the previous year, according to the latest statistics released by Dubai Traffic Department.

The number of car accidents during the same period also increased to 2,633 up from 2,561 in 2012 – an increase of 2.7 per cent.

Some of the car accidents were rather freak in nature, like when three people lost their lives as their cars hit trees, and one person died after running over an animal.

In addition, seven cases of motorists ramming their vehicles into road dividers or signboards were reported, claiming seven lives each.

Then there were six deaths reported after cars’ collision with concrete barriers on roads, while hitting the light posts and sidewalks claimed four deaths each.

The car turning turtle, or flipping over, resulted in the third-highest number of casualties. At least 154 cars flipped over during the period resulting in 12 deaths and injuring 166 people. Flipping over of cars formed five per cent of total accidents in Dubai.

Run-over incidents numbered 336, claiming 40 lives and injuring 321. Run-over mishaps accounted for 12 per cent of all accidents.

Collision, or the straightforward car crash, was unsurprisingly the most common type of accident with 1,729 cases reported – forming 34 per cent of all accidents. Car collisions claimed 63 lives on roads and 1,399 injuries, which ranged from moderate to serious.
