Fujairah women eye world record for palm mat
Seven women from Fujairah have completed what they believe to be the world’s largest mat made from palm date and hope their achievement would be recognised by the Guinness Book of Records, a newspaper said on Saturday.
The women from the Fujairah Women’s Association had toiled for nearly six months to finish the mat, which is around 23.3 metres long and 1.75 metres wide, the semi- official Arab language daily Alittihad said.
The mat was shown during the final day of a two-week palm date festival that was launched in the eastern UAE border town of Liwa before it was moved to Fujeirah and nearby emirates, the paper said.
“The Association hopes this work will be entered into Guinness as the world’s largest palm date mat,” said Saif Al Dahmani, director of Nakheel Heritage Company, which sponsored the production of the mat.
