A Sri Lankan driver allegedly stole Dh950,000 which his employer left in a bag in a car, and ran away, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Adam Khan, British, partner, testified that along with his and the company's driver, he headed to Mashreq bank at Al Riqa area on May 3.

“My friend and I stayed in the bank for only ten minutes and the driver was waiting in the parking lot. When we went out, we did not see the driver in the car which was left open with the key in the switch. We called him several times but the mobile was off. My friend drove the car and we moved to Deira City Centre. Upon reaching, my friend expressed astonishment about how the driver left the car open while there were Dh950,000 in it. Searching for the bag of the money we found it empty. We tried to reach the driver via a friend we know. But as we failed we called the police,” he testified.

ATT, 46, was later arrested by the police. He confessed to stealing the amount.

The court adjourned the case for verdict until June 29.
