Girl rebuffed by brother gets marriage nod by Sharjah judge

A court judge in Sharjah went out of his way and sided with a 35-year-old Emirati girl by approving her marriage despite opposition by her elder brother.

The girl went to court and told the judge Omar Al Ghafli that her brother has repeatedly rejected an Emirati suitor on the grounds that man is “socially inferior” to her family.

The brother admitted that he turned away the suitor because he is below the level of his well-known family although that man is educated and good job position.

The Arabic language daily 'Al Bayan' said the girl asked Al Ghafli to be her custodian so she can marry that man.

“The judge agreed and issued a sentence allowing the girl to marry that man in line with the UAE law which permits a girl to seek a custodian for marriage if she is above 18-years old,” the paper said.

“The judge took into consideration that the girl’s brother rejected her marriage without considering that she is 35-years old and could miss marriage in her life.”
