Drag racing – a dangerous pastime – primarily of men seems to have caught the fancy of women drivers in the UAE.

During the extended Eid weekend, Dubai Police nabbed several motorists who drove without valid driving licences including some reckless drivers.

According to Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazrouei, Acting Director-General, Dubai Traffic Police, Dubai Police caught 48 cars driven by girls without driving licences during the Eid holidays.

But the shocking news was when a police patrol spotted a teenage girl drag racing at night at crazy speed.

Cops chased her for almost half-an-hour when she tried giving them the slip by speeding against oncoming traffic on Khawaneej 2 Street going towards Amman Street opposite Oud Al Mutina.

The girl, about 16 years old, was finally nabbed, said Colonel Al Mazrouei.

Al Bayan, quoted him as saying that cops have noticed young girls without licence driving during night. He added that these youngsters often argue with officials who intercept them, trying to prove they are capable of handling and controlling the vehicles.

The teenager caught during the Eid weekend was driving a Nissan Patrol owned by her brother’s friend.
