In a bid to help suffering from chronic illness, Sharjah Girl Guides raised funds by organising a cookie-selling contest over two weeks, from November 9 to 22.

Sponsored by Sharjah Ladies Club, the contest titled ‘Cookie for a Cause’ raised Dh9,500.

Held at the SGG’s premises in Al Badea, Sharjah, a team of chefs from the traditional French bakery Vendome Paris taught the girls to bake cookies, which they sold during their school breaks.

Both Brownies (girls aged between 7 and 11) and Guides (aged between 12 and 15) participated in the contest, which required them to organize and decorate cookie-selling kiosks at school with the help of their teachers.

For three days a week, the groups sold as many cookies as they could, and the winning school was chosen based on the funds collected.

Out of nine participating schools, six were rewarded for their hardwork. In the Brownies category, Al-Khan School won the gold trophy; Sharjah School got the silver trophy; and Al-Saleh School took the bronze trophy.

In the Guides category, Al-Hulaliyat School won the gold; Al-Shaimaa School the silver; and Khawla bint Thalab School the bronze.

All schools received a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition for their support and efforts, while the participating girls earned the International Guiding badge, as cookie selling is a tradition in guiding associations worldwide.

“We launched ‘Cookie for a Cause’ to motivate young girls to participate in charity initiatives, boost their team spirit and encourage them to become positive role models within their communities. They also got the opportunity to develop basic sales skills,” said Shaikha Al Shamsi, assistant manager at Sharjah Girl Guides.

SGG offers five programmes under a badge system, and focuses on personal development, health, global awareness, community and international guiding.

SGG is an exemplary chapter of the UAE Girl Guides, which is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Established in 1973, SGG has provided a platform for hundreds of girls to enhance and develop to their fullest potential.
