An American engineer who was jailed for stealing handcuffs was on Tuesday released from the Al Aweer detention centre after serving a one-month sentence and will be deported, reported '7Days'.

It may be recalled that Adam Foster, from New York, was arrested at the Dubai International Airport as he boarded the plane to go home in February.

He took the cuffs from Jebel Ali Police Station when he was taken there on an unrelated matter. However, Foster said he found the handcuffs in the car park at Ibn Battuta Mall and kept it as a souvenir.

Family and friends of Adam Foster had launched an international appeal for his freedom. About 3,000 people took part in a letter-writing campaign urging US-UAE officials to grant the 30-year-old clemency, it added.

He worked for Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.
